UniCarb-DB a glycomics initiative

A platform to build on the success of recent resources and to bring together leading researchers.

The UniCarb-DB project was initiated in 2009 as a continuation of the EUROCarbDB with the initial ambition to provide a platform for structural and analytical data storage and retrieval associated with glycomic experiments. With current methodology for glycomic research the data generated from single tissue or protein are overwhelming, and there is currently limited possibilities to provide all the information as part of scientific publications. The efforts in generating structural information out of analytical data is a time consuming exercise and any tool that would aid in this interpretation would be a great help, not only to individual laboratories, but also for the whole glycomic community. The UniCarb-DB is currently focused on the mass spectrometric data and structural assignment based on fragmentation data. The database generation will serve as a base for development of tools for querying the database.


The development of UniCarb-DB is a collaboration of researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden; Macquarie University (Biomolecular Frontiers Research Centre), Australia; Proteome Informatics Group (Swiss Institute for Bioinformatics) and the National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT), Ireland.

Funding Support

The project is currently funded by internal funds and from a 2 year grant from the Swedish Foundation for International Cooperation in Research and Higher Education and by the Australian Research Council for further development of the database infrastructure and data presentation.

Whats New

Several new features are being developed to improve the user experience including:

  • Using epitopes to build search functionality with early GlycoSuiteDB integration
  • A new O-link HPLC 2AB database extension
  • Using GlycoWorkBench and templates to submit MS data
  • Incorporation of the MIRAGE guidelines
